Adding DonateMate to Your Cart Page
Adding DonateMate to Your Cart Page
The cart page is one of the best places to show your donation widget — customers are already in buying mode and see the donation option right before they check out. Here's how to add it.
Before You Start
Cart page app blocks are supported on Online Store 2.0 themes (Dawn, Refresh, Sense, Crave, and most modern themes). If you're on an older "vintage" theme, jump to the section below for vintage themes.
Not sure which theme type you have? In Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes, click Customize. If you see an "App blocks" option when adding sections, you're on OS 2.0. ✅
Adding the Widget to Your Cart Page (OS 2.0)
- Go to Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes
- Click Customize on your active theme
- Use the page selector at the top to navigate to Cart
- In the left sidebar, find the section you wish to add DonateMate to and click on it
- Click Add block
- Under Apps, select DonateMate - Donation Widget
- The widget will appear in the cart layout — drag it to position it where you'd like (above or below the cart items, or near the subtotal)
- Update the Widget with the desired DonateMate product and configure you settings.
- Click Save
That's it! Visit your cart page to see the widget in action.
Adding to a Cart Drawer
If your theme uses a slide-out cart drawer (where the cart slides in from the side rather than taking you to a separate page), the process is similar but you'll look for the Cart Drawer section instead of Cart.
- In the Theme Customizer, open the cart drawer by clicking the cart icon in the preview
- In the left sidebar, click Cart drawer
- Click Add block → select DonateMate
- Position and save
Note: Not all themes support app blocks inside the cart drawer. If you don't see an "Add block" option, your theme may not support it. In that case, adding the widget to the full cart page is the best alternative.
Tips for Cart Page Donations
- Keep the default amount low: A $2–$5 default donation converts well on the cart page — it feels like a small add-on, not a big ask
- Use a compelling description: Update your donation product description to explain where the money goes (e.g. "Add $2 to plant a tree with every order")
- One widget at a time: Only add one DonateMate widget per page — multiple widgets on the same page can cause display issues
Troubleshooting
The widget doesn't appear after I added it:
Make sure you saved the theme after adding the block. Also check that your DonateMate subscription is active and that you have at least one active donation product in the DonateMate dashboard.
I can see the block in the customiser but not on the live store:
Check that your theme changes were published (not just saved in preview mode). Also make sure you're viewing the live store, not a draft theme.
The widget appears but the Add to Cart button doesn't work:
This is sometimes caused by a conflict with other cart apps. Contact support and include your store URL — Ben can take a look.
